http://www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com/is-this-craig-plestis-replacement-at-nbc/ UPDATE: Is BBC America's Paul Telegdy To Become NBC's New Top Programmer? EXCLUSIVE: This is a really fast-moving story. For months now, I've been asking my sources when is NBC going to hire a real programmer since salesman Ben Silverman isn't. So this morning Paul Telegdy suddenly and unexpectedly resigned from BBC Worldwide America. Now I'm told that NBC wants him to become EVP over both unscripted and scripted entertainment. And my sources inform that it would be Telegdy's decision whether to fire or keep NBC's current reality czar Craig Plestis who only has months left on his contract. Now get this: the negotiations call for Telegdy to be given a bigger job like NBC Entertainment President in a year or to get paid off. This could solve NBC Universal chief Jeff Zucker's primary problem right now: how not to look like he made a mistake hiring Ben Silverman and still get the programming that the network needs to start succeeding. So Zucker could re-up Silverman and at the same time hire Telegdy in the subordinate role. I'm told Craig Plestis had been behind closed doors most of the day speaking to his attorney. And finally Plestis went to Ben Silverman and asked if he were being replaced by Telegdy, as insiders speculated to me today when Paul quit the BBC. Silverman told him no. A week ago, I reported that Plestis was panicking about the rumor he was being shitcanned as NBC Entertainment's EVP of Alternative Programming, Development and Specials. (The problem was that, beyond America's Got Talent, no recent NBC reality shows were sticking. Plestis "hasn't done anything at all in the three years he's been there," one of my sources confided.) Telegdy may or may not be able to fix NBC Entertainment's primetime which this fall failed yet again. In an effort to sell more shows and formats to U.S. outlets, BBC Worldwide America in April streamlined its sales and production operations under Telegdy, the Beeb exec most responsible for exporting Dancing With the Stars to ABC. As the BBC Worldwide America EVP of TV sales and content & production, Telegdy was also given power for TV sales and co-production dealmaking for the U.S. division, as well as production. So his job has been to do both scripted and unscripted, which means he'd expect no less at NBC. Telegdy, who reported to BBC Worldwide America prez Garth Ancier, had been the Beeb's point man in Los Angeles since 2004 and overseen the U.S. adaptations of Beeb hits including Dancing With the Stars and ABC's spinoff Dance Wars: Bruno vs. Carrie Ann, NBC's Clash of the Choirs, and CBS' embarrassingly short-lived Viva Laughlin. "He's considered extemely intelligent and a master manipulator and adept at corporate politics," one informant told me, adding, "Look out, Ben." So Zucker may also have in hand Silverman's replacement when, not if... This is why I so love Hollywood... For days now, Craig Plestis, who is NBC Entertainment's EVP of Alternative Programming, Development and Specials, has been calling everybody in his industry trying to chase down the hot rumor that he's about to be fired. "The best part is that he's been walking around the office blaming his underlings for spreading the rumor that he's getting shitcanned. When the person who started it his boss Ben Silverman," my insider tells me. The way I hear it is that, right after MipCom, Silverman started telling reality TV types that "there'll be changes" and "people will be relieved" -- thereby sparking the rumor that Plestis will be history sometime before Christmas. That's in turn creating hope that Plestis will be replaced by one or both of his well-liked and talented deputies -- Libby Jaynes-Hansen who has worked on both Last Comic Standing and The Biggest Loser (NBC's biggest reality franchise which Silverman personally brought in), and Jayson Dinsmore who's the exec on Deal Or No Deal (and internally credited with transforming that show into an NBC hit). The problem is that, beyond America's Got Talent, no recent NBC reality shows have tended to stick. Plestis "hasn't done anything at all in the three years he's been there," one of my sources confides. "If Ben fires him, it's the first management move he's done that's right." |

Both Zucker and Silverman should get canned and they should bring in some new blood on both fronts. Isn't Zucker part of the problem with Days, in addition to the usual suspects (Corday, Higley, etc)? |

YES! He wants DAYS to be history. He made some comment a couple of years ago that soaps went away from radio and they will go away from tv. He was talking about DAYS being gone by February of '09. The show has enough problems without his nay saying. |

They should both be out the door, but Zucker should be the first to go. The man has single-handedly destroyed an entire network. |

While this may be good news for NBC's primetime lineup, I think fans of Days of our Lives should be prepared for their soap to disappear under this new person. I watched BBC America regularly back then when this new person took charge. I could be wrong, but I beiieve he's the one who dumped EastEnders, a soap that had been airing for years on the network and replaced it with endless reruns of reality shows like Ground Force and Changing Rooms, shows that at the time were already airing several times a day. The network said it was due to low-ratings and profits. A year later, the show turned up on Dishnetwork pay-per-view and is still there to this day (I'm a subscriber). I haven't seen one soap given a chance to survive on that network since he came on board. |

I think Coronation Street might be the top one. But EastEnders ratings are pretty good. Hollyoaks too. And all them trump the ratings for US soaps. I'm thinking Days' days are numbered. This new person possibly being placed in charge may be why we haven't heard anything definitive from the network about them being renewed. |

You're right on the money! I was steamed when I FINALLY got BBC America and learned they'd dumped EE. Now it's off our cable lineup and I hear they're showing HOLLYOAKS. I don't want to watch MORE bad reality shows, talk shows and infommercials when the network gives yet MORE time to the affiliates. The other thing I don't want to see is the seventh hour of THE TODAY SHOW. :soapbox: |

There ARE times when it seems that the "suits" at ALL THREE networks want to kill the soaps. NBC is obviously the worst and it's such a shame. They had a killer lineup years ago and I know of lots of DAYS and PASSIONS fans who fall into the much sought after demo. |

Do you live in the US? If so, which channel will be airing Hollyoaks? You should watch it, btw. It is really good. |

Hollyoaks used to air on BBCAmerica, but they stopped showing it after 13 weeks. The only soap like program they air now is Skins. |

This may sound a little nationalist or closeminded of me, but I really don't think someone from BBC or BBC America could really give NBC the much needed boost. A lot of what NBC has right now, in terms of comedies(which are the network's weakest link) are poorly translated British or British-esque comedies. These comedies may work well for Brits and those few in the US who enjoy that type of humor, but for the rest of America, it's a genre or format that they don't understand or really want to. And the ratings reflect this. I think NBC's single-camera, no laugh track comedies are awful. I don't think there is anything witty, funny, or smart about these shows. They're often uncomfortable, stiff, and highly pretentious. NBC has built an entire lineup off this nonsense and has banked everything on Thursday nights for years. It's no wonder why people aren't watching. Where are the comedies and concepts like Golden Girls, Night Court, Wings and Cheers? Those shows that just told the joke and went with it? When did we go redefining the sitcom from all inclusive to this stilted inside joke? One of the first things the new NBC chief needs to do is really examine and evaluate these comedies and pick the best, retool the promising ones or the ones with star power or axe one or more altogether. NBC has been run by amateur film geeks for years. It's really embarrassing how far down the tubes NBC has gone in terms of its comedies. An executive from BBC or BBC America would not be an improvement, IMO. And I still wouldn't count on DAYS' safety. The only way I could see DAYS moving to another network would be if CBS axed one or both the PGP shows to accomate a cheaper to produce DAYS, especially if Steve Kent really believes in the show and honestly believes it is worth the profit margin.
